Erling Haaland makes history in PL opener

Manchester City ace nets brace for champions in win over Burnley

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has started the 2023-24 season in record-breaking form with a brace for the champions in their 3-0 win over ten-man Burnley away from home.

Haaland was an unstoppable force of nature in his debut season at the club, leading them to a treble and winning the PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards, as well as the FWA Player of the Year award.

The 23-year-old scored his first league goal of 2023-24 for Pep Guardiola’s side with his first touch of the season, firing home instinctively after a header across goal from Rodri landed at his feet.

Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to score the first two goals of a season when he fired home from a Julian Alvarez assist shortly after the half-hour mark.

The Norwegian ace also became only the second player ever after Didier Drogba to score twice on the opening day in consecutive seasons, having also scored a brace against West Ham United on Matchday 1 of the 2022-23 season.
