Erling Haaland made history on Wednesday night, becoming only the second player to score ten goals both at home and away in three different Premier League seasons. The Manchester City striker joined Harry Kane in this exclusive club after scoring the opening goal in City’s 3-1 win against Tottenham.
The goal came early in the match, on the 12th minute, when Haaland latched onto a low cross from the left and squeezed the ball past Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. It was a classic Haaland finish — sharp, quick, and clinical.
Although this hasn’t been a perfect season for City, with their title hopes looking distant, Haaland has continued his remarkable goal-scoring form. His goal against Tottenham brought his Premier League tally for the season to 20, with ten goals at home and ten away.
Haaland achieved the same feat in his previous two seasons. Last term, he scored ten away goals and 17 at home, while in his debut season, 14 of his 36 league goals came away from the Etihad.
The 24-year-old also matched a record held by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored 20+ Premier League goals in each of his first three seasons in the competition.
Haaland was denied a second goal in stoppage time, however, after a VAR review judged he had handled the ball in the build-up. Speaking about the decision, Haaland said, “I think it’s the wrong decision. I think it’s more a penalty than a free-kick. I never believe that should be disallowed, but that’s me.”
Despite the win, City remain in fourth place, though the victory closed the gap on Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, who are second and third in the league. Arsenal and Forest played out a goalless draw on Wednesday, while Liverpool extended their lead at the top with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
