Espanyol 3 Villarreal 1 (agg 5-3): Samuel Chukwueze’s goal fails to save the Yellow Submarines
Super Eagles exciting attacker, Samuel Chukwueze was on target on Thursday at the RCDE Stadium in Villarreal’s 3-1 loss to Espanyol to exit the Copa del Rey in the quarterfinal after an aggregate loss.
After playing a 2-2 draw at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Samuel Chukwueze and co knew they must win to get to the last four of the competition but failed to get the requisite result.
The home side waited till the 34th minute before taking the lead through former Valencia attacker, Pablo Piatti, who scored from the spot kick.
Another penalty was awarded to Espanyol just 4 minutes after the first and Borja Iglesias stepped up to slot it home to increase the tally to two.
Samuel Chukwueze stepped up to reduce deficit to one with a fine strike in the 42nd minute. At the end of the first 45 minutes the home team led but the visitors were all over their hosts.
When it looked like the visitors were close to getting the goal the equalizer, Borja Iglesias got his second of the day in the 74th minute to put the game beyond Villarreal.
In the end Espanyol won 5-3 on aggregate score to advance to the semifinal.
