Etafia Gives Positive Update on Nwabali’s Fitness Ahead of AFCON

Nigeria has received encouraging news in their preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after former goalkeeper Greg Etafia gave a hopeful update on Stanley Nwabali’s recovery.

There had been growing concern over Nwabali’s fitness after reports suggested he might not be ready in time for the tournament. The goalkeeper has been out of action since Nigeria’s penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the World Cup qualifying playoffs, and earlier comments from his club coach raised fears that both ankle and hand injuries could rule him out.

Etafia, speaking from his base in South Africa, said he had been in direct contact with people close to the situation and confirmed that Nwabali has “started training again” and is “feeling better.” He explained that the Super Eagles goalkeeper has moved from gym rehabilitation to light training on the pitch, a sign that his recovery is progressing well.

According to Etafia, Nwabali is still with the Chippa United squad and taking part in their training routine as he gradually builds his fitness. He added that he had spoken to one of Nwabali’s teammates, who assured him that the goalkeeper is responding positively to treatment.

Etafia expressed confidence that, if Nwabali continues working at his current pace, he should be ready in time for the AFCON. “He just needs to keep working,” he said. “If he continues like this, he will make it. I’m confident he will be okay.”

Nwabali’s potential return would be a major boost for Nigeria as he played a key role in the team’s impressive run to the AFCON final last year. He has already been included in the provisional squad, with the final list expected soon.
