Etim Esin: Iwobi Lacks Creativity Needed for Super Eagles
Former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin has criticised the team’s lack of creativity, stating that Alex Iwobi is not the solution to their problems.
The Super Eagles recently struggled to create chances during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers, even though they secured qualification. Their performances, including a shock defeat to Rwanda that ended their unbeaten run in the group, have raised doubts about their ability to compete for the trophy.
Speaking with Complete Sports, Etim highlighted the absence of a true playmaker in the Nigerian squad:
“The team lacks a creative midfielder — a proper number 10 who can control the game, provide assists, and unsettle opponents. That magic touch we saw in players like Jay-Jay Okocha, Henry Nwosu, or even myself is missing. Now, everyone is just average.”
Etim also dismissed comparisons between Iwobi and his legendary uncle, Okocha:
“People keep talking about Iwobi, but he can’t do half of what Okocha did. The comparison doesn’t make sense.”
Iwobi, who plays for Fulham, has been a key player for the Super Eagles and often serves as their creative midfielder. However, Etim believes the team needs a better option in that role to improve their attacking play and compete effectively in tournaments.
