Netherlands raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst, before a second half blitz saw Ukraine equalise with a brilliant goal from Andriy Yarmokenko and a second from Roman Yaremchuk within 5 minutes of each other. Dumfries scored a 85th-minute goal with a lunging header to give his side all three points in the fixture.
England defeated Croatia 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in their opening match at the European Championship. Raheem Sterling scored the winner in the second half following a Kalvin Phillips assist to avenge their defeat at the hands of Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semifinal.
Austria defeated debutants North Macedonia 3-1 in their group opener. Stefan Lainer opened the scoring for the Austrians before veteran Goran Pandev equalised for North Macedonia. Second half goals from Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic secured all three points for Austria in the game.
