Euro 2024: Erik Janza rescues point for Slovenia against Christian Eriksen inspired Denmark

Slovenia forced Denmark to a 1-1 draw in their 2024 European Championship opening group game decided on Sunday, June 16, 2024 in Germany.

Erik Janza’s late deflected strike canceled out Christian Eriksen’s early goal as Slovenia and Denmark played out a 1-1 draw in their Group C opener in Stuttgart.

Denmark took the lead in the 17th minute when Jonas Wind’s clever flick from a throw-in found Eriksen in space. The Manchester United midfielder made no mistake, firing a low shot into the corner past Jan Oblak. Eriksen, making his 132nd appearance for Denmark, controlled the first half, marking his return to the Euros 1,100 days after suffering a cardiac arrest in the previous tournament.

Both teams had opportunities to change the scoreline in the second half. Oblak denied Rasmus Hojlund with a close-range stop, and Adam Gnezda Cerin missed a header with the goal at his mercy.

The previously quiet Benjamin Sesko almost equalized for Slovenia with a powerful 25-yard drive that hit the woodwork. However, Slovenia drew level 13 minutes from time when Janza’s shot from the edge of the area took a significant deflection off Morten Hjulmand, wrong-footing Kasper Schmeichel.

Denmark will face England in their next Group C match in Frankfurt on Thursday at 5pm, while Slovenia will take on Serbia in Munich earlier that day.
