Euro 2024: Francisco Conceicao’s late goal secures Portugal victory over Czech Republic
In a thrilling start to their Euro 2024 campaign, Portugal managed a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic in Group F, thanks to a last-minute goal from young talent Francisco Conceicao.
The match, held at Leipzig Stadium, saw Conceicao, making his first competitive appearance for Portugal, netting the decisive goal in the 92nd minute. The 19-year-old capitalized on a defensive mishap by the Czech Republic, finishing off a low cross from fellow substitute Pedro Neto.
The game began with Portugal dominating possession but struggling to convert chances into goals. Cristiano Ronaldo, making history as the first player to feature in six European Championships at the age of 39, was uncharacteristically wasteful, missing several key opportunities. His struggles in front of goal were highlighted when he failed to convert a one-on-one chance set up by Bruno Fernandes and later saw a header go wide.
Despite Portugal’s dominance, it was the Czech Republic who took the lead in the second half. Midfielder Lukas Provod struck a stunning goal from the edge of the box, punishing Portugal for their missed chances.

Portugal managed to level the score in a fortuitous manner. Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek’s attempt to save a Nuno Mendes header ended disastrously as the ball rebounded off defender Robin Hranac and into the net for an own goal.
As the game seemed destined for a draw, Portugal’s persistence paid off. In the dying moments, Diogo Jota’s header, following a rebound off the post from a Ronaldo effort, was disallowed for offside after a VAR check. However, Portugal continued to push forward, and their efforts were rewarded when Conceicao found the back of the net in stoppage time, ensuring a narrow yet crucial victory.
This win puts Portugal level on points with Turkey, who also secured a 3-1 win against Georgia in an earlier Group F match. Ronaldo’s historic achievement of playing in six European Championships was somewhat overshadowed by his off-form performance, but the emergence of new talents like Conceicao offers hope for Portugal’s future in the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s landmark achievement was a significant highlight, but his performance suggested he might need time to regain his sharpness.
Despite being prolific in qualifying, the 39-year-old struggled to find his rhythm, which could be attributed to his recent playing stint in Saudi Arabia. Ronaldo’s potential match-winning moment was nullified by an offside call, leaving the younger generation to secure the win. Conceicao’s goal not only marked a memorable debut but also highlighted the depth of talent available to Portugal as they aim to add another European Championship to their accolades.
Portugal’s next challenge will be to build on this momentum and address the finishing issues that plagued them against the Czech Republic. With players like Ronaldo needing to find form and youngsters like Conceicao stepping up, Portugal remains a formidable contender in Euro 2024
