Euro 2024: Georgia goalkeeper the hero in draw against Czech Republic
Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili delivered a man-of-the-match performance, helping his team secure their first-ever point at a major tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in an exciting Group F clash in Hamburg.
In the first half, the Czech Republic dominated play, with Adam Hlozek having a goal disallowed for handball by VAR. Despite the Czechs’ control, Georgia took the lead just before halftime.
The breakthrough came in the fourth minute of injury time when Georges Mikautadze scored from the penalty spot after a handball by Czech defender Robin Hranac was spotted by the eagle-eyed Video Assistant Referee.
The Czechs continued to press in the second half and were rewarded just before the hour mark with an equalizer, ensuring both teams walked away with a point from the match.

The draw marks a significant milestone for Georgia, achieving their first point in a major tournament.
This draw does, though, boost Scotland’s chances of now making the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams, with Steve Clarke’s side possibly able to progress with just two points.
Czech Republic boss Ivan Hasek said in his post-match interview “I would like to congratulate Georgia and their coach, Willy Sagnol, on getting a point,” he told UEFA.com. “Both teams played a game that was spectacular for the supporters; there was a great atmosphere.
“We dominated the game, but failed to score the second goal. Twenty-six attempts speak for themselves. We have to admit we were glad that our opponents did not convert their chance on the counter in the last minute.”
