Euro 2024: Germany hold Switzerland to win group A

Germany clinched the top spot in Group A of Euro 2024 after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland, secured by Niclas Fullkrug’s injury-time equalizer.

The hosts, Germany, had earlier dominated their group stage matches with a 5-1 victory over Scotland and a 2-0 win against Hungary. However, they struggled against Switzerland, who proved resilient throughout the game. Switzerland remained unbeaten in the group stage and secured second place.

Robert Andrich appeared to give Germany the lead in the 17th minute with a long-range strike, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR check revealed a foul by Jamal Musiala in the build-up. Switzerland then took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Dan Ndoye, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Joshua Kimmich.

Germany pressed for an equalizer in the second half, with Kai Havertz hitting the crossbar and Granit Xhaka’s effort saved by Manuel Neuer. The crucial moment came in stoppage time when substitute Niclas Fullkrug headed in the equalizer, ensuring Germany finished top of Group A.

As a result, Germany will face the runner-up of Group C in the last 16, potentially Denmark, while Switzerland will meet the second-placed team from Group B, which could be Italy, Croatia, or Albania.
