EuroBasket 2025: Portugal Makes History
Neemias Queta Leads First EuroBasket Win in 18 Years
The basketball world just witnessed a moment that will go down in Portuguese sports history. On Day 1 of EuroBasket 2025, Portugal snapped an 18-year drought by defeating Czechia 62–50 in Riga. It was their first EuroBasket win since 2007 and it came in style.
Boston Celtics center Neemias Queta put on an unforgettable show, finishing with 23 points, 18 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 2 steals. His dominance on both ends of the court is what sealed Portugal’s victory. Queta became the first player since 1995 to record 20+ points and 15+ rebounds in his EuroBasket debut.
Portugal’s national basketball team hasn’t exactly been a regular at EuroBasket, making only their fourth-ever appearance. But this victory signals a new era one where Portuguese basketball is no longer just participating, but competing at the highest level.
This win gives Portugal momentum heading deeper into group play, but the road only gets tougher. Still, with Neemias Queta leading the charge and the team believing in their potential, they’re suddenly a squad no one can take lightly.
