Explained: Why Oscar will receive winner’s medal but Mikel, Begovic, Ake & Aina will not

Shanghai SIPG Brazilian playmaker Oscar Embaoba will receive the winner’s medal if/when Chelsea win the Premier League title this year but Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi will not be getting a medal.

The former Chelsea midfielder meets the criteria but former team-mates John Mikel Obi, Asmir Begovic and Nathan Ake miss out as they fall short in the number of appearances needed to be eligible for a medal.

The Blues can seal victory by beating West Brom at The Hawthorns on Friday evening.

And Brazil playmaker Oscar, 25, managed to rack up nine appearances before his move to Shanghai SIPG to get in on the act.

Ake has played 11 times in the league this season but all but one of those were for Bournemouth.

While Begovic has made one solitary appearance due to Thibaut Courtois’ form and fitness.

John Mikel Obi failed to make a single appearance before leaving Chelsea for Tianjin TEDA in January.

The Blues host Sunderland at Stamford Bridge and are set to give John Terry the perfect send-off by giving him the honours.
