Explained: Why Anthony Joshua cannot fight again until May 2025
According to British promoter Eddie Hearn, Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua will not be able to fight until at least May 2025, SportsRation reports.
Hearn revealed that Joshua, who suffered a defeat against Daniel Dubois in September, had hoped to face him in a rematch on February 22.
However, this date has been deemed too soon for the two-time heavyweight champion to recover. Hearn explained the complications stemming from Joshua’s injury, suggesting that while there are no major issues, there are several factors preventing him from beginning training.
“We had a very awkward call,” Hearn shared with Boxing News. “He wanted to fight on February 22, but there’s no way to ensure he could be 100% physically ready by then.”
The promoter emphasized the importance of Joshua’s recovery, stating that a premature return to the ring could jeopardize his future in the sport. “If you were to get beaten again by Daniel Dubois, you might have to seriously reevaluate your career.”
Hearn highlighted the need for Joshua to return fully prepared both mentally and physically, underscoring that a proper turnaround following a significant defeat would not be feasible. Hearn noted, “There’s no tear in the bicep, just normal wear-and-tear, which means he can’t train at the intensity he needs for a camp.”
Looking ahead, a potential matchup against Tyson Fury, who has long been linked to a superfight with Joshua, could be in the works for his return. Fury is set to face unified champion Oleksandr Usyk on December 21 following his own loss to the Ukrainian in May.
