Explained: Why Bruno Labbadia to Super Eagles deal failed

German coach Bruno Labbadia has revealed the reasons behind the collapse of his proposed move to become head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Labbadia was appointed to replace Finidi George, but the deal broke down due to logistical challenges.

Speaking to German news outlet Bild, the 57-year-old tactician shared insights into why the agreement fell apart:

“I wanted to go abroad. The basic requirement for me was to visit Nigeria and see everything on site, but that was no longer possible after the announcement,” Labbadia said.

The coach clarified that financial issues were not the problem:
“It was no longer about the pay. There were various organisational challenges, and as time went by, things got tighter and tighter. I didn’t even have two days left to meet with the national team.

“Then I had to pull the ripcord because the situation was starting to feel worse and worse.”

Labbadia’s experience in German football, including managerial stints at Hamburg, Wolfsburg, and Stuttgart, was seen as a potential asset for the Super Eagles. However, Interim head coach Austin Eguavoen has made a fine start, and may get the job on a permanent basis.
