Extraordinary Wrexham Make History with Promotion to Championship

Wrexham completed a remarkable journey by thrashing Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday to secure a historic promotion to the EFL Championship.

Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith scored just three minutes apart in the first half to put the Welsh club firmly in control. Smith, who joined in a club-record £2 million deal, later sealed the win with a third goal in the 81st minute.

The victory confirmed Wrexham’s second-place finish in League One and earned them automatic promotion, just behind champions Birmingham City.

This extraordinary achievement marks Wrexham’s return to English football’s second tier for the first time since their relegation in the 1981-82 season.

Wrexham’s story is even more special, as they have now become the first team in English football history to achieve three consecutive promotions across the top five divisions.

The race for promotion had been tight, with Charlton and Wycombe Wanderers still in contention. However, Wycombe’s earlier 1-0 defeat to Leyton Orient meant Wrexham only needed a win — and they delivered in style in front of their home fans.
