Ezinne Kalu named to Paris 2024 Olympic Basketball second team

Nigerian basketball star Ezinne Kalu has been recognized for her outstanding performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning a spot on the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament’s second team.

Kalu, a key player for Nigeria’s D’Tigress, played a crucial role in their historic campaign, helping them become the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.

Throughout the tournament, Kalu averaged 18.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game, making a significant impact on the court. Her efforts were pivotal in Nigeria’s success.

Joining Kalu on the second team is Julie Vanloo from Belgium, who averaged 14.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. Other notable mentions include Satou Sabally from Germany, who averaged 18.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, and Valeriane Ayayi from France, who averaged 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game during the tournament.

Ezi Magbegor of Australia also made an impression with her performance, averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in the Bronze Medal Game.

Jade Melbourne of Australia was named the Paris 2024 Rising Star, showcasing her skills as a point guard despite a rough start for her team. Gabby Williams won the Best Defensive Player Award, contributing significantly to France’s silver medal finish.

The MVP of the tournament was A’ja Wilson from the USA, who averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game. She was joined on the first team by Breanna Stewart, Gabby Williams, Alanna Smith, and Emma Meesseman.
