Falconets eye point vs Venezuela to reach World Cup round of 16

The Nigeria U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, are set to face Venezuela in their crucial third Group D match of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia, today.

Christopher Danjuma’s squad will be aiming to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to Germany in their second game after starting the tournament with a 1-0 victory over South Korea. A win or a draw against Venezuela will guarantee Nigeria’s place in the round of 16.

Having competed in every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002, the Falconets are well aware of what’s at stake. If they secure at least a draw, they will advance alongside Germany, who have already qualified for the knockout rounds.

Venezuela, on the other hand, find themselves in a must-win situation. They have yet to win a match in the U-20 Women’s World Cup and will be hoping for their first victory to stay in the competition, though they will still need favourable results from other matches.

In the group’s other fixture, Germany will take on South Korea. The Germans are already through to the next roun.
