Fans Angry as CAF Leaves Out Key Super Falcons Players from WAFCON Best XI

There has been strong criticism from Nigerian and African football fans after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the WAFCON 2024 Best XI – and some key Super Falcons players were missing.

Many were shocked that Ashleigh Plumptre, one of Nigeria’s top defenders, was not included, even though she played a major role in helping Nigeria win their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

Fans were quick to express their anger online. One fan wrote:

“Where is Ashleigh Plumptre? She was our best defender! This is not just a mistake – it’s a joke!”

Another said:

“Our whole defence should have made the list – Plumptre, Alozie, Demehin and Ohale. They were solid throughout the tournament!”

Despite Nigeria’s strong performance, only four Super Falcons players made the Best XI:

  • Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Best Player of the Tournament,

  • Chiamaka Nnadozie, who won Best Goalkeeper,

  • Michelle Alozie, who played a key defensive role, and

  • Esther Okoronkwo, who impressed as a rising star.

Still, fans feel that wasn’t enough, especially since Nigeria conceded only three goals in the entire competition.

Ashleigh Plumptre, known for her calm defending and leadership, was a standout player throughout the tournament. Many fans believe her absence from the list shows unfair treatment and a lack of recognition for the hard work defenders put in.

One supporter said:

“You can’t ignore the heart of our defence. Plumptre helped us hold strong against top teams. Leaving her out makes no sense!”

The reaction highlights the passion of football fans and raises questions about how CAF picks players for honours like the Best XI.

Many are now calling for more transparency and fairness in the selection process, especially for players who may not score goals but play a big part in a team’s success.
