‘Far from Over’ – What Kennedy Boboye said after Akwa United beat Tornadoes to exit NPFL relegation zone
Akwa United head coach Kennedy Boboye has praised his players for their commitment and discipline following their 2-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on matchday 31 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The win at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo lifted the Promise Keepers out of the relegation zone and extended their unbeaten run to five matches.
Speaking after the game, Boboye commended his players for adapting to his tactical approach and following instructions. However, he emphasised that the battle for survival is far from over, urging his team to maintain their momentum in the final stretch of the season.
“I really want to congratulate my players; they played with great determination and commitment. You can see that their confidence level is very high, and we want to maintain that in all our remaining matches,” Boboye said.
“We are not done with the season yet. This result has taken us out of the drop zone, but we still have seven matches to play. Our target is to go for maximum points in every game. We have to fight for every available point, both at home and away, because that is the only way we can secure our NPFL status for next season.”
Akwa United took the lead just before halftime when Niger Tornadoes defender Ifeanyi Oloye inadvertently headed Etiene Asuquo’s long throw-in into his own net. Substitute striker Abson Mare sealed the win in the second half with a clinical finish, ensuring the 2021 league champions continued their resurgence.
The victory moved Akwa United to 16th place on the NPFL log with 37 points from 31 matches. The team has now won four and drawn one of their last five games, scoring eight goals and conceding just once.
