Fidelis Ilechukwu explains major Super Eagles’ tactical decision in draw against Zimbabwe
Super Eagles assistant coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has defended head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to stick with the same defensive setup after Victor Osimhen was substituted in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Tuesday, 25th March.
After Osimhen’s exit, the coach chose to introduce an attacking player instead of reinforcing the defence, a decision that sparked criticism from some Nigerian football fans. Many believed a defensive change would have helped the Super Eagles protect their lead and secure all three points.
Speaking to Lagos Talks 91.3, Ilechukwu explained the decision, emphasising the team’s attacking mindset and confidence in their defence.
“This is a team that created almost eight or nine chances but didn’t convert them. At that moment, the coach made a decision based on the team’s philosophy and unity. We are all working together as one.”
The assistant coach added that the team expected to score more goals and did not think they would concede against Zimbabwe.
“We believed we would score more than two goals. We were pushing for more goals and did not expect Zimbabwe to break through our defence and score.”
Ilechukwu also pointed out that creating chances does not always guarantee victory, using Rangers as an example.
“It’s normal. Just like Rangers yesterday, we lost despite creating more than nine chances. The coach is working with all of us, and we are fully behind him. We still have an advantage to qualify, and we must qualify.”
The draw in Uyo was a setback for Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes, leaving the team in a challenging position. With four games left, the Super Eagles must bounce back quickly and secure crucial wins to keep their chances of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.
