FIFA President congratulates Nigerian champions Rangers FC
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sent a congratulatory message to Rangers FC of Enugu for their success in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Rangers International secured the 2023–24 NPFL title with one game to spare after defeating Bendel Insurance 2-0 in their final home game of the season at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, followed by a 2-1 away victory against Gombe United.
Infantino, who has been leading the World Football Body since 2016, took to his Instagram story to congratulate the Flying Antelopes, writing, “Congratulations Rangers International FC on being crowned 2023-24 champions of Nigeria,” while resharing an official image of Rangers.
Rangers clinched their eighth league title, their first since 2016, in a dramatic match-day 37 that saw their rivals falter. Key defeats for Remo Stars and Enyimba against Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos, respectively, played a crucial role in sealing the championship for Rangers.
Under the guidance of Fidelis Ilechukwu, Rangers took an assertive approach in their match against Bendel Insurance. Kenechukwu Agu opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, setting the tone for the rest of the game, with Chidiebere Nwobodo extending their lead in the 65th minute.
Following their NPFL triumph, Rangers will represent Nigeria in the forthcoming CAF Champions League, where they aim to achieve continental success and possibly a place in the new FIFA Club World Cup, powered by Infantino’s regime.
