Finidi George appointed Super Eagles Head Coach
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former international Finidi George as new Super Eagles head coach, ending search for Jose Peseiro’s successor.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said on Monday, April 29, 2024 that it has picked the former Super Eagles player to be the head coach. George is known for his time playing as a winger for teams like Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis.
The decision to hire George came after the NFF Board agreed with its Technical and Development Committee. They thought George, who is 52 years old, was the right choice for the job.
George has been working with the team for a while now. He was an assistant coach before being named interim coach after José Santos Peseiro left.
Peseiro left after the Super Eagles performed really well in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, finishing in seconf place.
In March, Finidi George led the team in two friendly matches in Morocco. Nigeria won against Ghana but lost to Mali in the second game.
In the announcement, the NFF highlighted George’s past successes, having played for Nigeria’s national team, earning 62 caps and competing in two FIFA World Cup tournaments.
One of his most famous moments was when he helped Rashidi Yekini score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal in 1994.
Following his appointment, Finidi George will have as an immediate task, preparing the Super Eagles for two important matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria needs to win the matches against South Africa and Benin Republic billed for Uyo and Abidjan in the next five weeks.
The NFF stressed that these games are crucial. Right now, Nigeria is in third place in Group C of the African qualifiers, behind Rwanda and South Africa.
