Finidi George: There is no special formula for winning games
Embattled Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach Finidi George says that there is no special formula for winning football matches.
His statement comes in the wake of Nigeria’s disappointing 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in their Matchday 4 encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Abidjan.
During the post-match conference, Finidi George pinpointed a lack of commitment as a key reason for the team’s underperformance. He stated, “Yeah, it’s to win, but there’s no special formula for that. We have to see how the players will start the new season and see how we can get the best out of the players.”

He further stressed the importance of commitment, saying, “So everybody must be committed. I think with that commitment we’ll win games. I believe we’re going to win games.”
Despite the team’s current struggles, Finidi remains optimistic. “And if we can win games, the battle will still be there. So we can’t throw in the towel, because we’ve had only three points. We have to find a way to get these players back,” he added.
The Super Eagles, who were silver medalists at the 2023 African Nations Cup, are currently placed fifth in Group C with just three points from four games. Benin Republic tops the group with seven points, while Lesotho is in second place with five points. Rwanda and South Africa each have four points, with a game in hand.
