Finidi George to take charge of Super Eagles for Ghana and Mali Friendlies

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are gearing up for their upcoming clashes against the Black Stars of Ghana and the Eagles of Mali with former Ajax star Finidi George set to take charge as their coach.

Scheduled to face their West African rivals in highly-anticipated friendly matches, Nigeria will square off against Ghana on March 22, followed by a match against Mali four days later, both to be held in Morocco.

Currently without a permanent coach following the departure of former manager Jose Peseiro, who led the team to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles will have Finidi George at the helm for these two fixtures.

Reports indicate that Finidi, who previously served as one of Peseiro’s assistants during the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, will manage the team temporarily as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a permanent replacement.

While there were speculations that NFF technical director Austin Eguavoen might take over, those rumors have been dismissed, leaving Finidi George as the interim choice.

Meanwhile, Finidi remains a contender for the permanent managerial role, having submitted an application along with other former internationals like Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh, and Samson Siasia.

With several candidates vying for the position, including Amunike and former Cameroon coach Antonio Conceicao, it remains to be seen who will ultimately lead the Super Eagles in the long term.

SportsRation can confirm the NFF is seriously considering an indigenous coach with Emmanuel Amunike leading the race.
