Finidi George triumphs over Emmanuel Amunike as Rivers United defeat Heartland FC 3-1 in NPFL showdown
Finidi George emerged victorious in a much-anticipated clash of Super Eagles legends as Rivers United secured a 3-1 win over Heartland FC in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Saturday.
The match, held at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, saw Finidi’s tactical brilliance shine as his Rivers United side outplayed Emmanuel Amunike’s Heartland FC.
Both former teammates, who were part of Nigeria’s iconic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, have since ventured into coaching, and Saturday’s encounter marked their first head-to-head battle on the touchline.
Finidi, knowing only a win would solidify his status as a top tactician, watched his team take the lead just three minutes into the game.
Taofeek Otaniyi headed in from Okon Aniekeme’s cross, capitalising on a defensive error by Heartland. However, Amunike’s Heartland responded before halftime, with Christian Molokwu equalising through a header from Chijioke Opara’s long throw after a mistake by the Rivers United goalkeeper.
The second half saw both teams create chances, but it was Rivers United who regained the lead in the 68th minute when Kabiru Abdullahi found the net at the near post, beating Heartland’s goalkeeper. Abdullahi struck again in stoppage time with a stunning free-kick, securing the win for the Pride of Rivers.
The victory lifts Rivers United to four points. In contrast, Heartland FC remain at the bottom after losing their first two matches of the season.
Amunike, who was appointed following Heartland’s return to the NPFL after their relegation last season, will be eager to turn his team’s fortunes around as they search for their first win of the campaign.
