Fiorentina Want to Keep De Gea as Man United Think About Return Move
Fiorentina are planning to extend David de Gea’s contract by one more year, even as reports suggest Manchester United might try to bring him back this summer.
De Gea, who played for Manchester United from 2011 to 2023, is remembered as one of the club’s best goalkeepers. He left the club at the end of the 2022/23 season, and Andre Onana was brought in as his replacement. De Gea then spent a year without a club before signing for Fiorentina in August 2024.
The 34-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been in top form for Fiorentina, keeping 10 clean sheets in 31 matches this season. His performances have caught the attention of his old club, who may be looking at him again due to Onana’s struggles.
Onana has not fully impressed during his two years at Old Trafford. Backup keepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton are also being linked with possible exits from the club.
De Gea’s current deal with Fiorentina ends in June, but Marca reports that the Italian club plans to activate a clause to keep him for another season. He may also receive a pay rise as part of the extension.
Fiorentina’s president, Rocco Commisso, said:
“We want to keep players like De Gea and [Nicolo] Fagioli, but we’ll see if they also want to stay. That way, we can start next season even stronger.”
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea made 545 appearances and won several trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup (twice), Community Shield (three times), and the Europa League.
Even if Onana stays, it’s likely that Manchester United will sign a new goalkeeper this summer. Heaton’s contract is ending, and he might move into a coaching role. Bayindir is also unhappy with being the number two and could leave in search of more playing time.
Despite the rumours, Manchester United are not actively looking to replace Onana right now. The Cameroonian is expected to start when the Red Devils play Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday.
