Five things we learnt from Chelsea pre-season friendly draw against Brighton

Timo Werner early goal was cancelled out by a spot kick from Pascal Gross helped Brighton secure a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Chelsea fans got to see two of their new signings, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech in action on Saturday.

While both players had a good game the team wasn’t particularly impressive.

So, what did we learn from the match

1. The Ngolo Kante conundrum

Ngolo Kante is a world class player and he remains the best player in his position but he is not suitable to Chelsea current structure.

The Frenchman who has been linked with a move to Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain would do with a move away from Chelsea.

With Chelsea’s possesion based pattern he seems out of place, he constantly gives the ball away and couldn’t really help retain possession.

He does his job of tackling and winning the balls but his inability to help the team when attacking affects Chelsea when in transition.

Frank Lampard needs to find a formation that will utilise Ngolo Kante effectively or sell him.

2. Chelsea need a vocal leader on the pitch Azpilicueta is not that guy

There were report doing the rounds that Frank Lampard his willing to hand the captaincy hand band to his new signing Thiago Silva.

The report didn’t go well with most Chelsea fans who insisted that Ceaser Azpilicueta should remain the skipper of the team.

Ceaser’s commitment and dedication to the badge have been mentioned as to why he shouldn’t be changed.

But after today’s game maybe they will all have a rethink because Chelsea need a vocal leader on the pitch.

Azpilicueta came on in the second half and the team conceded two penalties, he wasn’t the guilty party but he was the leader of the team and also at the back.

He didn’t do his job as the vocal leader of the team and this needs to be sorted out if the team must challenge in the new season.

3. Clarke-Salter was the best Chelsea defender

Clarke-Salter was by far Chelsea best defender against Brighton.

The academy graduate who just returned from a loan move started on the left side of the defence alongside Andreas Christensen and played really well.

He was seen giving instructions and playing like a big part of the team. Looked assured and composed for the most part of the game.

4. Chelsea still lacks the creativity in the middle of the pack
We have seen Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the playmaking role but they are not good enough.

Mason the best amongst the above mentioned players but even he gets lost in most games.

In the absence of the other two players mentioned RLC was employed in the role today but the team lack creativity in the middle of the park.

5. Chelsea can spend millions and still win titles

Even if Chelsea spend more millions bringing in more players this team could still win nothing if Frank Lampard doesn’t find a winning formula and combinations.
