Flamingos star Harmony Chidi vows to emulate Osimhen at 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
Harmony Chidi, star striker of Nigeria’s under-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, has set her sights on leading the team to glory at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Inspired by Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, Chidi aims to replicate his success at the tournament in the Dominican Republic.
The Flamingos are scheduled to make their debut against New Zealand, hoping to build on their impressive performance at the 2022 edition, where they clinched a bronze medal.
Chidi Confident of a Gold Medal Finish
Ahead of the tournament, Chidi expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and their potential to return with the ultimate prize.
“I believe my God. I believe the technical crew. I believe in my coach, Bankole Olowookere,” Chidi said.
“We are going to reach the finals and bring the medal back—the gold medal! We’ve worked hard and made sacrifices for this, and now it’s in God’s hands.”
Chidi’s Role Models: Osimhen and Haaland
Chidi shared that she idolizes Victor Osimhen, the top scorer at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, and Erling Haaland.
“My idols in male football are Erling Haaland and Victor Osimhen. I love these two because of how they score, deliver, and never give up.”
“Even when others are not doing well, they always find a way to make it count.”
Incredible Goal-Scoring Record
Chidi’s phenomenal form in the qualifiers set high expectations. She scored 12 goals, including two hat-tricks, becoming the top scorer across all six confederations. She registered at least one goal in every game, proving her consistency and importance to the team.
Flamingos Out to Make History
The Flamingos’ head coach Bankole Olowookere believes Chidi will be crucial to the team’s quest for a first-ever World Cup title. As they take on New Zealand in their opener, Nigeria aims to surpass their previous achievement and secure the gold medal.
Nigerians are hopeful that Chidi, drawing inspiration from Osimhen’s rise to stardom, can guide the Flamingos to new heights in the Dominican Republic.
