Flick Explains Why He Turned Down Long-Term Barcelona Deal

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has revealed why he rejected the club’s offer of a long-term contract extension, choosing instead to sign a shorter one-year deal.

The German manager, who took charge of Barcelona last summer, was offered a three-year contract by the club’s hierarchy following an impressive debut season. However, Flick has decided to extend his stay by just one more year until 2027, instead of committing to a longer-term agreement.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga match against Leganés, Flick opened up about his decision.

“I’m really enjoying my time here,” he said. “The staff, the players, everyone—they’re unbelievable. The atmosphere is fantastic, like a family. I love living in Barcelona, and I’m full of energy and ideas to keep improving this team.”

Despite his positive experience, Flick stressed that he prefers to take things step by step.

“I’m not the type of coach who signs a three-year deal just to feel secure. I want to work for this club — the best club in the world — step by step, paso a paso,” Flick explained.
“Right now, it’s one year… Then we’ll see. If everyone’s happy, we move forward together. But I’m focused on the present — we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Under Flick’s leadership, Barcelona are enjoying a superb season, sitting top of LaLiga, through to the Copa del Rey final, and strong favourites in the UEFA Champions League — raising hopes of a possible treble.

The 59-year-old’s preference for a short-term deal highlights his focus on performance and progress, rather than long-term security, as he continues to guide the Catalan giants through a successful campaign.
