Flying Eagles star Solomon Agbalaka joins Russian outfit on season-long loan
Left-back joins PFC Sochi in Russian top flight
Nigerian defender Solomon Agbalaka has penned a season-long loan deal with an option to buy with Russian top-flight outfit PFC Sochi from lower division Nigerian side Broad City FC.
Talented left-back Agbalaka gained prominence after shining for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles at the AFCON U-20 tournament in Egypt and the FIFA U-20 World Cup tournament in Argentina. The 19-year-old was a regular starter for Nigeria in both competitions and was one of their most consistent performers.
Following his exploits at these age-grade tournaments, Agbalaka began to receive suitors. He was close to an agreement to join Canadian club Vancouver Whitecaps FC before the deal fell through as the MLS side opted for more experience in Canada international Sam Adekugbe.
Agbalaka then went for a trial at Russia where he impressed PFC Sochi officials, earning a contract with the club. He will join on an initial loan deal, with the option of becoming permanent at the end of the season. The left-back joins fellow Flying Eagles stars Rilwanu Haliru Sarki, Jude Sunday, Salim Fago Lawal and Chijioke Aniagboso in securing important transfers after impressing with the national team.
