Foden scores winner as Manchester City win first leg 2-1
Kevin De Bruyne the star of the show at the Etihad Stadium
Manchester City picked up a relatively comfortable 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Etihad Stadium.
Magical Belgian midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne was at his majestic best as he received the ball in the middle of the park before releasing it and continuing his run into the Borussia Dortmund area where he finished a cutback from Riyad Mahrez to open the scoring for Manchester City in the 19th minute. The home side were lucky to still be in front after 17 year old Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Jude Bellingham picked the pocket of Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson and slotted home only for a foul to be awarded in Manchester City’s favour. Borussia Dortmund defended brilliantly and were also lucky to remain only a goal behind after Manchester City passed up good opportunities to add to their lead. The visitors eventually pulled themselves level after Bellingham found Erling Haaland who nonchalantly played the ball into the path of club captain Marco Reus who sidefooted home beyond Ederson to score a vital away goal for his side in the 84th minute. Borussia Dortmund thought they had come away with an unlikely draw before a moment of pure brilliance from De Bruyne gave Manchester City the win. He picked up the ball in the Dortmund half before playing an inch-perfect ball over the top for Ilkay Gundogan to latch onto, and the German midfielder laid off the ball for Phil Foden to score from close range and give his side the win at home.
Borussia Dortmund will welcome Manchester City to next week’s second leg knowing that a 1-0 win would take them through to the semifinals after they were able to score an important away goal. Manchester City looked by far the superior side and will be looking to finish off the German side in the second leg.
