Former Arsenal Goalkeeper Alex Manninger Dies at 48 After Road Accident

Former Arsenal FC goalkeeper Alex Manninger has tragically passed away at the age of 48 following a road accident in Austria.
Manninger, who spent part of his career at Arsenal alongside Super Eagles legend Nwankwo Kanu, featured in 34 matches with the Nigerian forward during their time at the club. Both players were part of Arsène Wenger’s squad during a memorable era at Highbury.
The Austrian goalkeeper often served as backup to David Seaman but remained a respected member of the squad. His time at the club coincided with Kanu’s rise as one of Arsenal’s most influential and beloved attackers.
Kanu joined Arsenal in 1999 and quickly became a fan favourite for his creativity, skill, and ability to deliver in big moments. His iconic hat-trick against Chelsea FC remains one of the most celebrated performances in the club’s history.
Manninger also played his part in Arsenal’s success during the late 1990s and early 2000s, including their Premier League and FA Cup triumphs in the 1997/98 season. Although his appearances were limited, his role in providing depth helped the team maintain its competitive edge.
Both Manninger and Kanu shared a dressing room with top players such as Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, and Thierry Henry, forming a side that defined Arsenal’s dominance in English football during that period.
After leaving Arsenal, Manninger went on to play for several European clubs, including Juventus FC, ACF Fiorentina, and Udinese Calcio, enjoying a long career across the continent before retiring.
His death is a sad loss to the football community, with many remembering him as a dedicated professional and a valued teammate.
