Former Arsenal Youth Player Billy Vigar Dies After Head Injury During Match

Chichester City FC and former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar has sadly died at the age of 21 after suffering a serious brain injury during a match.

Billy, who was born in Worthing, was hurt during a game against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday, in the Isthmian League Premier Division. Reports suggest he may have hit a concrete wall, but the club has not confirmed how the injury happened.

In a statement, Billy’s family said they were “devastated” that he passed away while playing the game he loved.

“After suffering a serious brain injury last Saturday, Billy was placed in an induced coma,” the family said. “He had surgery on Tuesday to try and help his recovery, but sadly the injury was too severe, and he passed away on Thursday morning.

“The messages of support show how loved and respected Billy was in football.”

A Promising Career

Billy Vigar came through the Arsenal academy after being scouted at his local club, Hove Rivervale, at age 14. He scored 17 goals in his first season and earned a full-time scholarship in 2020. Despite injuries, he impressed in his second year and signed a professional contract in 2022.

Arsenal said in a statement they were “deeply sorry” to hear of his death and praised him for his determination, versatility, and love for football.

“Billy will always be remembered for his passion for the game and the pride he felt wearing the Arsenal shirt. He once said being spotted by Arsenal scouts was ‘the most important day of his life’,” the club added.

Billy also played for Derby County, Eastbourne Borough, and Hastings United during loan spells.

Tributes Across Football

  • Derby County said they were “deeply saddened” by Billy’s passing, remembering his time with their Under-21s in 2022-23.

  • Hastings United said they were “devastated” and would always remember Billy fondly.

  • Eastbourne Borough said both football and non-football staff were shocked and saddened by the news. Billy made 32 appearances for the club during the 2023–24 season.

  • The FA sent their “heartfelt condolences” to Billy’s family, friends, and everyone at Chichester City FC.

Flowers and tributes have been left outside Chichester City’s ground. The club confirmed that their match against Lewes this Saturday has been postponed.

Billy Vigar will be remembered not only as a talented young footballer but also as a loved teammate and a kind person who made a lasting impression wherever he played.
