Former Super Eagles media officer calls for patience in Nigeria’s coaching search

A former media officer of the Super Eagles, Oluwatoyin Ibitoye has urged the Nigerian football federation to exercise patience in its search for a permanent coach for the national team.

His remarks come after interim coach Augustine Eguavoen’s recent performances in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign.

Following the Super Eagles’ goalless draw against Rwanda in their second group game, Ibitoye took to social media to express his thoughts on the ongoing search for a foreign coach. He advocated for giving Eguavoen more time to prove himself before any permanent decisions are made.

“Please keep your search for a foreign coach for the @ng_supereagles in the cooler for a bit longer,” Ibitoye posted. “Let’s buy some time and see what Coach Austin Eguavoen and the team will cook for us in October and November. If the food is sweet, fine. If not, we’ll know what to do.”

The Super Eagles dominated possession against Rwanda, much like their previous match against Benin Republic, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. A key moment came when Ademola Lookman’s goal was controversially disallowed, adding to Nigeria’s frustration as they shared the points in a 0-0 draw.

Despite growing concerns about the team’s inability to convert opportunities into goals, Ibitoye’s plea reflects the sentiment that Eguavoen and his team deserve more time to demonstrate their capabilities.

Eguavoen, who has denied recent rumors of his resignation, will now face crucial tests in October and November as the Super Eagles continue their AFCON qualifying campaign. The outcomes of these matches could determine whether the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sticks with the interim manager or resumes its search for a permanent coach.

As the Super Eagles return to their respective clubs, Nigerian football fans and analysts, including Ibitoye, are calling for patience and continued support for Eguavoen and his team. For now, the spotlight remains on Eguavoen’s next move as he seeks to secure Nigeria’s place at AFCON 2025.
