Frank Onyeka Scores Stunning First Coventry Goal as Sky Blues Boost Promotion Hopes

Frank Onyeka ended his two-year goal drought in Coventry City’s thrilling 3-2 Championship win over Derby County on Friday.
The Nigerian midfielder’s long wait for a goal came to an end in spectacular fashion at the Coventry Building Society Arena. His stunning long-range strike in the 12th minute gave the home side an early lead and underlined his growing importance to the team.
Coventry were pegged back just before halftime when Ben Brereton Díaz scored to cancel Onyeka’s opener. Englishman Jack Rudoni restored Coventry’s lead just past the hour, but Derby equalised again from the penalty spot through Díaz. With ten minutes remaining, Rudoni completed his brace to secure all three points for Frank Lampard’s men.
Onyeka joined Coventry on loan from Brentford in February 2026 to gain more regular playing time. The deal includes a mandatory permanent transfer if Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League. His arrival has coincided with a strong run of form for the club, who currently sit at the top of the Championship table.
Since joining, Onyeka has become a key figure in midfield, providing energy, balance, and composure. He has stabilised the team, broken up opposition attacks, and now, with this goal, shown he can deliver decisive moments going forward.
If Coventry win promotion, Onyeka’s move will automatically become permanent, rewarding both player and club. With his influence on the pitch growing week by week, Onyeka looks ready not just to help Coventry reach the Premier League, but to thrive at the next level as well.
