Frank Onyeka tagged ‘outstanding’ after Augsburg debut

Augsburg manager Jess Thorup has praised Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka following his impressive debut for the Bundesliga side in their 3-1 victory over St. Pauli on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Onyeka, who recently joined Augsburg on a season-long loan from Premier League club Brentford, made an immediate impact in his first appearance for the team.

The 26-year-old provided an assist during the game and showed glimpses of the quality that Augsburg sought when signing him on transfer deadline day.

Speaking after the match, Thorup lauded Onyeka’s performance and highlighted how quickly the Nigerian international settled into the squad, despite only having limited training time.

“He (Onyeka) only trained twice and was involved in the international matches,” Thorup said. “From the start, he showed us what a good player he is. He is ready to help the team, and that’s what he did today.”

Thorup acknowledged that while Frank Onyeka didn’t find the back of the net, his overall performance was exceptional. “Maybe the only thing missing was the goal at the end, although he had an assist and played very well. For a first game, it was really an outstanding game,” Thorup added.

Onyeka’s loan move from Brentford to Augsburg came as part of a late transfer window deal, and he is already proving to be an asset for the Bundesliga club.
