Friday Ekpo lists what Super Falcons should do after Paris Olympic games elimination

Following the Super Falcons’ disappointing exit from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, former Nigerian international Friday Ekpo has urged the team to focus on the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria’s Olympic campaign ended without a victory, with losses to Brazil, Spain, and Japan in their group stage matches.

Ekpo also suggested that the team needs better preparation and the inclusion of young players. “After this tournament, I think the team needs better preparation and introduction of young players in the Super Falcons,” he told Complete Sports.

He emphasised the importance of moving forward: “We should accept the reality that the team is out of the Olympic Games and focus on helping them have a better showing at the 2025 WAFCON.”

Despite the setback, Ekpo encouraged the players to stay positive, saying, “The players must come home with their heads held high.”

On a positive note, the Super Falcons have qualified for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). They secured their spot after a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over Cape Verde in the final round of qualifiers. In the second leg, Nigeria won 2-1 despite an early setback, with goals from Esther Okoronkwo and Rasheedat Ajibade ensuring the victory. This win followed a 5-0 triumph in the first leg.

Nigeria has participated in every WAFCON since the tournament’s inception in 1991. The 2024 WAFCON is scheduled to be hosted by Morocco.
