Friendly: Poland Score Late to Hold Super Eagles to 2-2 Draw in Warsaw

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were denied victory after Poland scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw in an international friendly played in Warsaw on Wednesday.

The Eagles looked set to record a second straight win over the Poles after goals from Terem Moffi and substitute Paul Onuachu gave them the advantage.

However, with only seconds left on the clock, Przemyslaw Wisniewski struck a powerful long-range volley that beat goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and earned Poland a share of the spoils.

Nigeria will now shift attention to another friendly match against World Cup-bound Portugal on June 10.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle named a starting line-up made up of Okoye in goal, debutant Abdullahi Bewene, Igoh Ogbu, Emmanuel Fernandez and Bruno Onyemaechi in defence. Wilfred Ndidi, Tochukwu Nnadi and Frank Onyeka operated in midfield, while Akor Adams, Moffi and Moses Simon led the attack.

Poland threatened early and almost took the lead in the fourth minute, but Jakub Kaminski failed to direct his free header on target.

Three minutes later, the hosts came close again when Akor Adams nearly turned a corner into his own net, but the ball drifted just wide.

Robert Lewandowski then had a chance from a set-piece in the 14th minute, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Okoye.

Nigeria opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Moffi, who finished from close range after connecting with a low cross from Simon. The goal was checked by VAR before being confirmed.

Poland nearly responded five minutes later, but Okoye made a calm save to keep Nigeria ahead.

As the first half drew to a close, Nnadi tested the Polish goalkeeper with a curling effort, which was pushed away for a corner.

The home side equalised immediately after the restart when Kaylee Potulski finished from close range after Nigeria failed to clear a corner kick.

Chelle made seven substitutions before the second half began, bringing on Calvin Bassey, Philip Otele, Raphael Onyedika, Rafiu Durosinmi, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi and Onuachu.

Otele quickly made an impact, delivering a dangerous cross that was cleared by the Polish defence.

Lewandowski almost punished a poor back pass from Sanusi in the 71st minute, but his weak shot was saved by Okoye.

A minute later, Sanusi tried his luck with a powerful left-foot strike, but the goalkeeper pushed it away.

Nigeria regained the lead in the 77th minute when Onuachu calmly converted a penalty after a Polish defender handled the ball inside the area.

Okoye continued to impress and produced an excellent save in the 82nd minute to deny Lewandowski from close range.

The goalkeeper was called into action again in added time, making another important stop from a low effort.

But just when Nigeria seemed certain of victory, Wisniewski struck in the 95th minute with a superb effort from distance to rescue a 2-2 draw for Poland.

The result means the Super Eagles remain unbeaten under Chelle and will now prepare for their next test against Portugal next week.
