Fulham FC condemn “racist and homophobic abuse” on Calvin Bassey

Fulham Football Club have released a strong statement condemning the “racist and homophobic abuse” received by Calvin Bassey after their FA Cup win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Fulham won the match 4-3 in a penalty shootout, after the game ended 1-1 following extra time. Bassey, 25, put Fulham ahead in the 46th minute, before Bruno Fernandes equalised for United.

After the match, Bassey was targeted with abusive messages on social media. Fulham responded with a statement on Monday, saying: “Fulham Football Club is deeply shocked by the racist and homophobic abuse received by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup match against Manchester United.

“We strongly condemn this behaviour, which has no place in football or society. These actions are completely unacceptable, and we stand fully behind Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full support.

“We will do everything we can to work with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible for these hateful messages and take the strongest possible action against them.

“Fulham Football Club is committed to tackling all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to creating an environment of respect and inclusion.”

Nigeria International, Calvin Bassey, has been a key player for Fulham this season, forming a strong partnership with Joachim Andersen in defence.

Fulham Football Club will now face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with the match set for March 29 at Craven Cottage. That match will come after the international break. During the FIFA Window, Bassey and international teammate, Alex Iwobi are expected to feature for Nigeria in World Cup qualification games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
