Gareth Bale blames his Spanish on team-mates chatting in English
Gareth Bale says he’s not learning Spanish quickly because Real Madrid players like practising their English on him in the dressing room.
It has been noted how the Welshman is still struggling with the language despite spending two and a bit seasons in the Spanish capital, barely able to string more than a few sentences together in his new language.
He told the Telegraph: “There’s obviously a few who speak English – Toni Kroos does, so we speak a lot. Luka Modric speaks English. Mateo Kovacic speaks English. Cristiano. [Alvaro] Arbeloa. All the medical staff. Rafa speaks it. So I get by. The thing is, most people want to practise their English on me, so I’m not learning Spanish so quickly. I did a Spanish interview at the start of the season. Which nobody understood.”
However the Telegraph also says Bale misses PG Tips, chocolate, Nando’s and, seemingly in a contradiction, being able to talk to people in English.
“The language is probably the one thing I miss the most,” he added. “Just sometimes being able to have a simple chat with somebody. It’s a lot more difficult to do in Spanish.”
