Genot Rohr’s Benin Republic beat Rwanda to 2025 AFCON

The Cheetahs of Benin Republic, under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, have secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

On Monday, 18 November 2024, Benin earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw away against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in their final group match. The result was enough to see them through to the tournament.

Libya had entered the game with high hopes after a surprising 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on matchday five. Meanwhile, Benin had come close to defeating Nigeria earlier in the campaign, only for a late Victor Osimhen header to secure a draw for the Super Eagles.

In the decisive game, Rohr’s tactical setup ensured Benin’s defense held firm against Libya’s attacks, securing the vital point they needed. Despite Rwanda’s unexpected win over Nigeria in Uyo, Benin’s superior goal difference saw them clinch the second qualification spot in the group.

With Nigeria finishing top, the Cheetahs join the Super Eagles as representatives from their group for the AFCON 2025 tournament.
