French striker Olivier Giroud scored a second-half brace to give AC Milan a 2-1 win over Inter Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza in their Serie A clash.
Serie A champions Inter Milan took the initiative in the Milan Derby in the 38th minute of the encounter. Former Milan playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu sent in a peach of a cross, which was met at the far post by Croatian winger Ivan Perisic with a low volley which beat Mike Maignan in the AC Milan goal.
The champions looked to be coasting to another win that would take them closer to a second successive Scudetto, before a quickfire double from French striker Giroud turned the tie on its head.
Giroud equalised for AC Milan in the 75th minute with a simple tap-in at the far post after a shot from Sandro Tonali squeezed through and found its way to the far post.
The Frenchman turned the tie on its head by completing his brace only three minutes later in truly sensational fashion. The striker received a pass from Davide Calabria before turning sharply in the box and releasing an early shot that Samir Handanovic got a hand to but could not keep out.
The Rossoneri ended the game with 10 men after French left-back Theo Hernandez committed a blatant foul on Denzel Dumfries as the Inter Milan wing-back tried to fashion an equaliser.
AC Milan are now just one point behind their city rivals Inter, having played one match more than the champions. AC Milan are now in second place in Serie A after the win. The Rossoneri were able to win a Milan Derby after conceding first for the first time since 2004.
This was a first home defeat for Inter Milan in Serie A since October 2020, when a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace gave AC Milan a 2-1 win over their rivals Inter Milan.
