Golden Eaglets held to stalemate by Burkina Faso in U17 WAFU B opener

In their opening fixture of the 2024 U17 WAFU championship, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets found themselves unable to secure a victory as they were held to a draw by Burkina Faso, dampening hopes of a strong start.

The tournament kicked off with a dominant display from host nation Ghana, who sent a clear message to all contenders with a commanding 5-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the inaugural match.

Facing off against Burkina Faso, the defending champions, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets aimed to assert their dominance early in the competition. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to secure all three points, settling for a disappointing draw.

Throughout the game, the five-time World Champions controlled the proceedings, dictating the pace and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Despite their dominance, they struggled to capitalize on their chances, allowing Burkina Faso to stay in contention.

Despite their limited forays into Nigerian territory, the Burkinababes managed to hold their own defensively, frustrating their opponents and ultimately earning a valuable point from the stalemate.

Looking ahead, the Nigerian side will be eager to rectify their missed opportunity as they prepare to face Niger in their second group match on Sunday.

With aspirations of reclaiming their winning form, the Manu Garba tutored Golden Eaglets will be aiming for a more decisive performance to bolster their campaign in the U17 WAFU championship.
