Golden Eaglets through to WAFU tournament semi-final
Qualify thanks to superior goal difference
Nigeria’s U-17 side, the Golden Eaglets have qualified for the semi-final of the U-17 WAFU competition holding in Lome, Togo. The side had been in a three-team group B with Ghana and Ivory Coast.
Coach Fatai Amoo’s wards had picked up only one point from their games, losing 1-0 against Ivory Coast in their opening game and drawing 1-1 against Ghana, causing them to stare directly at elimination from the group phase. Their cause was helped however by the Little Elephants of Ivory Coast defeating the Black Starlets of Ghana by 3 goals to 1 in the final group game. The result meant that the Eaglets finished in second place on 1 point and a goal difference of minus 1, while Ghana finished bottom of the group with 1 point and a goal difference of minus 2.
The Golden Eaglets now have a shot at redemption when they face Burkina Faso’s U-17 team in one semi-final, while Ivory Coast take on Niger in the other on January 15th in Lome. The winners of both semifinals would automatically qualify for the 2021 U-17 African Cup of Nations billed to hold in Morocco.
