Griezmann: Leaving Atletico for Manchester United would have been “dirty”

Antoine Griezmann has said that he turned down a chance to join Manchester United this summer, because it would have been “dirty” to leave Atletico Madrid following the club’s transfer ban.

Griezmann has committed his future to Los Colchoneros, penning a new five-year deal last month.

The summer began with serious speculation that a move to Old Trafford was inevitable, but Griezmann insists he could not turn his back on Atleti.

“I stayed mainly because of the transfer ban,” Griezmann told FourFourTwo Magazine.

“Atletico needed me more now than ever.

“I felt I had to stay. It would be dirty to leave. I wouldn’t have been myself, or the person that I feel I am today, if I had left this club in that way. I have got too much respect for this club and the people in it to leave now.”
