Guardiola: City need to be ready for change

Pep Guardiola has said Manchester City must prepare for his eventual departure, acknowledging that he will not remain at the club forever despite having more than 18 months left on his current contract.

The Manchester City manager signed a contract extension in November 2024 that runs until the end of the 2026–27 season. He addressed questions about his future while speaking to the media ahead of City’s Premier League match against West Ham.

When asked whether he expects to see out his deal, Guardiola said:

“The last three or four years, at a certain period, I get asked this question. Sooner or later, I will quit from Manchester City. I understand that question, but I have 18 months, and I am so delighted.”

Guardiola said he remains focused on the team’s progress rather than speculation about his future.

“I was so excited with the development of the team, that is all I can say. This question happens every single season. I am OK. The club and myself are well connected and the decision we have to take, what is going to happen will happen.”

He also made clear that no talks have taken place about leaving the club before the end of his contract.

“There are no discussions. End of the subject. I will not be here eternally, but I’ve said before I will not be here forever.”

Guardiola added that long-term planning is a normal responsibility for any top club.

“The club has to be prepared for everything, for the players and the CEOs. What is going to happen will happen.”

Recent reports have linked Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca with a potential future role at Manchester City. Maresca, who previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant at the club, rejected those claims.

“It doesn’t affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation,” Maresca said.
“I have a contract here until 2029 probably, and my focus is just about this club.”

Guardiola has managed Manchester City since 2016, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League during his tenure. City currently sits two points behind league leaders Arsenal and hosts West Ham in their next league fixture.
