Manchester City moved to within two points of the Premier League after a narrow 1-0 win over Leeds United, closing the gap on league leaders Arsenal.
A stoppage time first-half goal from Antoine Semenyo proved decisive in a match played without Erling Haaland, who missed out with a minor knock.
During the game, referee Andrew Madley paused play briefly to allow fasting Muslim players to break their fast at iftar, in line with a Premier League protocol introduced in 2021.
The moment drew boos from sections of the crowd.
After the match, City manager Pep Guardiola addressed the reaction directly.
“There are people fasting because of Ramadan. Why do you boo when the game is paused for a minute or two? Show respect for religions,” he said.
“We live in a modern world, don’t we? Look at what’s happening in the world right now. Watch what happened today. The whole point is to respect all religions. What’s the problem?”
The brief pause allowed players observing Ramadan to hydrate, a practice now widely accepted across top leagues.
