Herve Renard reveals he almost became Super Eagles Head Coach

Former Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard has revealed that he was close to replacing Finidi George as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is still searching for a permanent head coach, with Augustine Eguavoen set to continue as caretaker boss for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Libya.

The NFF has been considering several candidates for the position, and one of the top names was Herve Renard, a two-time AFCON winner who has previously coached teams like Ivory Coast, Saudi Arabia, and the France women’s national team.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Renard shared that he seriously considered the offer from the NFF. “I almost went to Nigeria. I thought about it for a few days, even weeks, before deciding to say no,” Renard said. “It was the best offer I’ve had so far, but the other details didn’t suit me.”

While Renard is no longer an option, Eguavoen has stated his conditions for taking the job permanently, with a long-term contract being one of his top requests. The NFF now has to make a decision on which direction to go as the Super Eagles prepare for their important matches against Libya.
