How Alex Iwobi helped Fulham hand Newcastle their first defeat of the season

Alex Iwobi continued his impressive run of form, playing a key role in Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle United, handing the Magpies their first defeat of the season.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw against West Ham last weekend, Fulham returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion at Craven Cottage, thanks in part to the Super Eagles star.

Iwobi, who has been ever-present in Fulham’s starting XI this season, was instrumental in the Cottagers’ success, providing the assist for their second goal and controlling the midfield alongside Emile Smith Rowe.

Fulham took the lead in just the fifth minute when Adama Traoré’s low cross found Raul Jimenez in the box. The Mexican striker produced a smart turn and finish to beat Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, giving Fulham the perfect start.

The Cottagers doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute, courtesy of Iwobi’s brilliance. The Nigerian midfielder threaded a perfectly weighted pass to Emile Smith Rowe, whose shot deflected off Pope’s hand and slowly rolled into the net, making it 2-0.

With this commanding lead, Fulham controlled much of the first half, keeping Newcastle’s attack at bay while continuing to create chances of their own.

Newcastle started the second half on the front foot and quickly pulled a goal back, with Harvey Barnes finishing a slick move orchestrated by substitute Jacob Murphy just 46 seconds after the restart. Barnes calmly slotted the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno, setting up a tense second half.

Despite Newcastle’s pressure, Fulham remained composed, with Iwobi playing a crucial role in managing the game from midfield. The Nigerian’s vision and work rate kept Fulham in control, and they sealed the victory in the 90th minute when Reiss Nelson added a third goal, ensuring the Cottagers walked away with all three points.

Iwobi’s performance has been a highlight of Fulham’s campaign so far. His assist against Newcastle brings his tally to three assists in five Premier League matches this season. Playing with confidence and precision, the 28-year-old midfielder has quickly established himself as a key player under Marco Silva.

Fulham’s head coach, Silva, praised Iwobi after the match, noting his growing influence on the team. “Alex is a player who brings so much to the game. His intelligence, positioning, and ability to pick out the right pass make him vital to how we play.”

This win lifts Fulham into the top half of the Premier League table, while Newcastle, who had been unbeaten in their opening four matches, will be disappointed with their performance. Fulham’s ability to bounce back after last weekend’s draw against West Ham signals their intent to challenge for higher league positions this season.

As for Alex Iwobi, his recent performances are proving his worth in Fulham’s midfield, and fans will be hoping he can continue this form as the season progresses. With his vision and creativity, Iwobi looks set to be a central figure in Fulham’s push for a strong Premier League campaign.
