How Stanley Nwabali Considered Quitting Football After Losing Both Parents

Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has revealed that he struggled with thoughts of quitting football after losing both of his parents.

The 29-year-old lost his father in November 2024, shortly after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Benin in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Nwabali was allowed to leave the national team camp after receiving the sad news. Just weeks later, on January 1, 2025, he also lost his mother.

Although his performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations brought him wide recognition, Nwabali admitted that his form has dropped since the deaths of his parents. He has now spoken publicly about the emotional pain for the first time.

Nwabali was on the bench for Nigeria’s match against Tanzania after struggling with injury in games against Tanzania and Tunisia. Speaking before the Super Eagles resumed training ahead of their last-16 match, the goalkeeper explained how deeply the losses affected him.

He said he tried to stay strong and keep his feelings to himself, but there were moments when he felt like giving up football. Losing both parents within a short period, especially his mother, was extremely painful and difficult to talk about.

Nwabali also revealed that he spoke to team captain William Troost-Ekong about his desire to quit the game. However, with the support of his teammates, he has been able to continue his career, even though the pain remains.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will hope that Nwabali regains full fitness and focus as Nigeria prepare for the knockout stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
